Long Description

General Research Atlas map of official countries of the world - as defined byby ISO-3166-Codes For The Representation Of Names Of Countries - arranged in a geographic, radial layout, by UN defined Macro Geographical (Continental) Regions And Sub-Regions. Country sub- branches are hyperlinked to a range of free, definitive, online general & geographic  knowledge resources about each country (including the BBC, CIA and Wikipedia).

The maps is arranged in a 'geographic, radial layout,' firstly by UN defined Macro Geographical Region (e.g. "Europe") and then by Sub-Region (e.g. "Nothern Europe"), with Country sub-branches then arranged A-Z within the Sub-Region.

Country branch topic content comprises of the following elements:-

  • High quality country flag graphic (free download from
  • ISO3166-1 Official Country 'Short Name' in English
  • ISO3166-1 alpha-2 2 character letter code
  • ISO3166-1 alpha-3 3 character letter code
  • ISO3166-1 numeric 3 3 figure numeric code
  • ISO3166-1 Official Country 'Long Name' in English

The international legal status of the country  ("Sovereign state" or "Overseas territory/other") is also indicated.

The main country branches have a single hyperlink to the relevant country / region main article on Wikipedia for quick reference (though users could replace/add to this with links to the many other knowledge resources contained in the sub-branches).

Sub-branches are hyperlinked to a range of free, definitive, knowledge resources about each country that can be used as a starting point for detailed, desktop research. These resources are arranged in 2 "collections":-

1. General Information Resources - From definitive "authorities" who compile them as part of their public service remit like the United Nations and the CIA, to the many crowd-sourced projects of the Wikimedia Foundation:-

  • BBC News: ISO3166-1 Country Profiles - The BBC maintains "instant guides to the history, politics and economic background of countries and territories, which include audio and video clips from BBC archives" on the BBC News website.
Note there are no guides for a few of the minor territories or Antarctica.
  • CIA World Fact Book: ISO3166-1 Country Profiles - Maintained regularly for the benefit of the US government by the US Central Intelligence Agency since it was founded in 1947, and first made available to the public in 1975, the World Fact Book contains information on the history, people, government, economy, energy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for over 26o "world entities". The Reference tab includes: maps of the major world regions, as well as Flags of the World, a Physical Map of the World, a Political Map of the World, a World Oceans map, and a Standard Time Zones of the World map. There are also Appendices of Abbreviations, International Groups, Selected International Environmental Agreements, Country Data Codes, Hydrographic Data Codes, Geographic Names and Weights & Measures.
  • CIA Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments ("World Leaders") Directory - The US Central Intelligence Agency publishes and updates the online directory of Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments monthly (archived PDF versions back to January 2001 are also freely downloadable from the website). The directory is intended to be used primarily as a reference aid and includes as many governments of the world as is considered practical, some of them not officially recognized by the United States.
  • ISO Online Browsing Platform: ISO3166-1 Country page - The standard, internationally recognised list of codes of letters and/or numbers referring to countries and subdivisions maintained by the International Standards Organisation (ISO 3166), saves everybody time as well as helping to avoid the errors that would inevitably arise if only a country's name was used as a unique reference (e.g. names will change depending on the language being used). For example, all national postal organizations throughout the world exchange international mail in containers identified with the relevant ISO 3166 country code. By referring to the official ISO 3166-1 Online Browsing Platform, users can get any changes that occasionally occur to a country's ISO 3166-1 entry "straight from the horse's mouth".
Note - Though ISO 3166-1 does not define the names of countries (which come from official United Nations sources), both the 'Short Name' and 'Full Name' are included in the standard. However the 'Full name' field is blank for a worryingly large number of countries on the entry on the browsing platform. Although this is often the case for dependent territories e.g. Bermuda* (BM - BMU - 060), it is true for some sovereign states too e.g. Ireland (IE - IRL - 372), which according to Wikipedia is officially called the "Republic of Ireland". Where this is the case the ['Full name'] is shown in square brackets on the country branch in the map.
  • UNdata portal - ISO3166-1 Country Profile page - Since its foundation, the United Nations System has been collecting statistical information from member states on a wide variety of topics. However this statistical data is often stored in different proprietary databases, each with unique dissemination and access policies, which requires users to move from one database to another to access different types of information. The UNdata portal platfom, developed by the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), addresses this problem by pooling the major UN databases and those of several international organisations into a single internet environment and point of access. There are over 60 million data points, covering a wide range of themes including  Agriculture, Crime, Education, Employment, Energy, Environment, Health, HIV/AIDS, Human Development, Industry, Information and Communication Technology, National Accounts, Population, Refugees, Tourism, Trade, as well as the Millennium Development Goals indicators. UNdata, which is continuously being improved by the developers, brings the unique and authoritative set of data not only to the desks of decision makers and analysts, but also to journalists, to students and to all citizens of the world
  • Wikipedia: ISO3166-1 Country Page - This is the main Wikipedia article summarising the etymology, history, geography, administrative divisions, politics, economy, demographics & culture of the country. It also serves as a jumping off point to the many, more detailed Wikipedia articles on the country, as well as external sources on the web. As is always the case with crowd-sourced platforms like Wikipedia, some articles will contain more content than others, but you can easily contribute to the article as a Wikipedia editor to improve it.
  • Wikipedia: ISO3166-1 Country Portal - Wikipedia Portals are another useful entry-point that help readers and/or editors navigate their way through Wikipedia topic areas, promote content and encourage contribution. They may be associated with one or more WikiProjects, such as those concerned with gathering & publishing the information related to each country on Wikipedia.
  • Wikipedia: Index of ISO3166-1 Country-related articles - Each ISO3166-1 country is also a Wikipedia category, and this index page lists all the sub-categories and pages attributed to the category. Another good starting point for detailed, desktop research.
  • Wikimedia Commons: Index of ISO3166-1-Related Images & Media Files - Each ISO3166-1 country is also a category on Wikimedia Commons, the common media file (images, sound and video clips) repository for all Wikimedia projects (e.g. Wikipedia). The content listed on this page is in the public domain and freely-licensed for everyone to use, in their own language, you do not need to belong to one of the projects to use it.
  • Wikivoyage: ISO3166-1 Travel Guide - Another Wikimedia project, Wikivoyage is built in collaboration by volunteer authors from around the globe who write without pay, with the spirit of sharing knowledge that makes travel so enjoyable. Whenever travellers meet each other on the road, they swap info about the places they came from and ask questions about places they're going. We want to make it easy to share that knowledge and let others share it.

2. Geographic Information Resources - Static "traditional" map collections as well as dynamic, online mapping services:-

Index "Marker" Tags
Map branches are also tagged with one or more of the following Marker Tag groups as appropriate:-

  • UN Macro Geographical Regions
  • UN Macro Geographical Sub-Regions
  • ISO3166-1 Country

Note Countries that are Dependencies or Other Such Non-Sovereign State status are also tagged with the "Parent Country" tag to preserve the formal relationship between them.

In addition we have created an icon marker group with the country flags and labelled with the ISO3166-1 Country short name and codes.

These marker tags give users the ability to:-

  • "geo-filter" the map on any tag to show only those countries with the same tag eg. all countries that make up a particular Macro Geographical Region, all countries associated with a particular country such as the United Kingdom ie. overseas territories and dependencies.
  • "geo-tag" any branches they add to the map.
  • "geo-tag" and "geo-filter" any branches in a pre-existing map by simply copying and pasting the Tag Marker Groups from the Countries of the World Template Atlas into the Index pane of the map they want.

Background Notes

1. The country flags are a free download from the good people at

2. The ISO3166 standard comes in 3 parts:-

  • ISO 3166-1:2006 - Country Codes
  • ISO 3166-2:2007 - Country subdivision codes
  • ISO 3166-3:1999 - Codes for country names which have been deleted from ISO 3166-1 since its first publication in 1974

3. Updates to ISO 3166-1 are posted in official newsletters on the ISO3166 website. Note that updates occur very infrequently.

4. The Maintenance Agency for ISO3166 (ISO3166/MA) is made up of the following National Standards Organisations:-

  • Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR)
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
  • British Standards Institution (BSI)
  • Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN)
  • Swedish Standards Institute (SIS)

As well as major UN or other international organisations:-

  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
  • Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
  • Universal Postal Union (UPU)
  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)

5. Although many countries on the ISO3166-1 list are Dependent States & Territiories, it does not include all dependent territories and possessions of a particular Sovereign State ie. a dependent territory is not automatically classed as a separate country.

6. Similarly the ISO3166-1 list does include some Countries whose status as a Sovereign State is in dispute eg. the short name of the Republic of China (TW - TWN - 158) is listed as "Taiwan, Province of China", but not all de-facto states eg. Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic "Transnistria" (a de facto independent state inside Moldova).

7. The 'Short Name' listed on the ISO3166-1 webpage is sometimes actually the long name. Sometimes this is to minimise confusion between States with similar names eg. the official short name listed for the Republic of Congo-Brazzaville (CG - COG - 178) is "Congo" whilst that for The Democratic Republic of the Congo (CD - COD - 180) is "Congo, The Democratic Republic of the". In other instances however there is no obvious reason eg. Islamic Republic of Iran (IR - IRN - 364) is listed as "Iran, Islamic Republic of ", rather than simply "Iran", or Syrian Arab Republic (SY - SYR - 760) listed as "Syrian Arab Republic", rather than simply "Syria", which are the official short names cited in other sources eg. Wikipedia list of countries. Note also that sometimes the official long name is the same as the short name.

8. Users should be aware that as far as the United Nations Statistics Division classification of international regions and sub-regions is concerned, "the assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other affiliation of countries or territories". As such it can sometimes be counter-intuitive eg. Cyprus (CP - CYP - 196) is classified as being part of Western Asia, not Europe, whilst the Russian Federation (RU - RUS - 643) is part of Eastern Europe, not Asia.

Update Regime

As the geo-political world does not stand still the ISO-3166-1 standard is updated periodically. As and when updates are received we will update this map and re-issue it. At the very least it will be subject to annual review As a research map, it may also be updated in the future if further useful content is identified (either by ourselves or our users).

Specific Purpose

The main purpose of this map is 2-fold:-

  • Research Tool - Our aim is for this map to be the only research tool you will ever need to find out about the countries of the world, for whatever purpose.
  • Public Education Resource - Users can discover further information about the countries and peoples that make up this big old beautiful world of ours and perhaps make a connection that they wouldn't otherwise have done.

Specific Tips For Use

1. Use this map to research destinations prior to travel. In particular the WikiVoyage website is geared specifically for travellers and is updated regularly with important information that may determine if you travel there at all eg. security issues.

2. Use this map as a template to create your own country based maps such as international customers or sales territories. These can be further enhanced if used in conjunction with the other country maps available.

3. Country branches are also tagged by international region and sub-region, as defined by the United Nations Statistics Division. By using MindManagers Power Filter function, users can filter the map to show only those countries that make up that region. Users are free to add their own tags to branches to aggregate countries according to their own criteria.

See the About Our Maps section for general hints & tips for working with our maps.
