Long Description
The UK Government Digital Transformation Programme is one of the biggest and most advanced of its type in the world. This FULL webmap (1645 hyperlinks over 2545 topics) shows every navigation menu hyperlink
and sub-headings, on every individual webpage, in every official online resource collection, available to UK public sector bodies to design, build and run digital services in an agile way, including the Service Manual, Digital Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice.

With >1600 branches hyperlinked through to the relevant pages on the Gov.uk website, our "map of the roadmaps"  provides a visual framework for a huge, and freely available, body of knowledge that will help any organisation carrying out its own digital transformation of services.

The toolkit is arranged into the following sections:-

  • Standards - Digital Service Standard, Service Manual & Technology Code of Practice

  • Design and Style - Design Principles, Design patterns, Frontend code, GOV.UK prototype kit & Style guide

  • Components - GOV.UK Notify, GOV.UK Pay, GOV.UK Verify, & GOV.UK Platform as a Service & Registers

  • Monitoring - Performance Platform

  • Buying Products & Services - The Digital Marketplace

Background Notes
The first edition of this map, published in November 2015, was restricted to what was called the "Digital Service Design Manual". The Government Digital Service has since re-arranged and expanded this into the "toolkit" you see here.

Our previous map also included complete sub-maps of the GDS and Cabinet Office websites and the GDS Blog. These will now be incorporated into other maps that will be made available in due course.

Update Regime
This map will be checked and reviewed annually. Users are welcome to request we update it sooner if there are serious errors and ommissions or significant new discoveries have been made.

Uses & Benefits
We can think of at least 3 ways to use this map (but we're sure many others will come to mind):-

  • Visual Framework Index Of Official Resources - If you are part of the UK Government Digital Community delivering digital transformation, then use our map to locate and access the official resources you need quicker and with a lot less stress! (And as citizens and business owners, we all have a stake in the more efficient delivery of public services)..

  • Jumping Off Point - This branches in this map are the navigation links to all the individual web pages in the official toolkit. However within pages are links to lots of other useful digital service resources, some of them elsewhere on GOV.UK such as blog posts, but others lie elsewhere on the web. Thus even if you are a seasoned "digital transformation warrior",  it is well worth "mining" over a few coffee breaks as you never know what useful information you will discover by "jumping off map"!

  • Public Education Resource - At Knowledge Mappers we always believe in not re-inventing the wheel whenever possible, and that a "wise man learns from the mistakes of others". Any individual or team currently designing, building or running a digital service in an agile way, or planning to do so in the future, will benefit from the huge, freely available, collective knowledge of the 100's of workers in the UK Government Digital Community that are enacting the biggest programme of its type anywhere in the world!!

NOTE: WHATEVER USES YOU INTEND TO PUT OUR MAP TO (AND THERE ARE MANY ;-), WE WOULD ALWAYS RECOMMEND USERS WORK ON A DUPLICATE COPY SO THEY WILL STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL AS A STARTING POINT FOR SUBSEQUENT PROJECTS.

Specific Tips For Use
1. The map is not content, it contains navigation branches hyperlinked to the online content. Thus by definition the structure and wording of the map mirrors the structure and wording of the navigation links in the websites linked to. If you would rather it was structured in a different way, then there is nothing to stop you re-arranging the map branches as you see fit. That's what digital information maps are good for, re-organising "on the hoof", in an agile way. Go on... Charge away..... Fill your boots ;-).

See the About Our Maps section for general hints & tips for working with our maps.
