What are knowledge maps?

Top

Knowledge maps are based on the concept of MindMapping (TM), which has been pioneered by Tony Buzan for the last 30 years or so.

Mind mapping is basically a totally different way of capturing, storing and working with information that works in harmony with the way your brain actually processes it ie. in branching chains of associated concepts (literally 'chains of thought'). In a mind map information is not stored in traditional lines, paragraphs and pages of text, but instead in discrete 'chunks', arranged around the central topic with the logical (often hierarchical) inter-relationships between them radiating out from the centre to form a branching structure. Text is minimal, a few words only that encapsulate the concept or idea, but this is supplemented by the use of different colours, pictures, shapes and symbols so that the mindmap engages the whole brain, either in creating it or reading it.

As such there is a direct analogy with geographic maps - both are 'pictures' that depict the relative relationship and connections between objects and show what is at a particular place (one geographic, the other mental). The concept of scale and levels of detail are also important. Just as geographic maps of a particular area can be of different scales that depict different levels of detail, mind maps can show as much or as little detail about a given subject as the creator wants.

See our About Knowledge Maps section to find out how our knowledge maps share all the advantages of the mindmap structure, but document and describe real world (rather than mental) objects and phenomena like organisations, community networks and processes and procedures.

What are the advantages of using knowledge maps?

Knowledge Maps record and display information in a much more versatile and less rigid way than traditional formats like databases and spreadsheets, over which they have many advantages :-

  • Information can initially be collected rapidly "on the hoof" in the form in which it is discovered, rather than having to be squeezed into the single level, 2 dimensional grid structure of most databases and spreadsheets and thereby losing integrity in the process.

  • Information about the same subject but from different sources can be easily and consistently combined, even if the source files are structured in different ways, in different file formats etc.

  • Information can easily be rearranged within the map into a more logical and consistent structure at any time as well as cut and pasted into other maps.

  • Users can navigate their way through the collected information in a more easily and intuitive way and therefore :-

    • Find out what they need to know more rapidly

    • Be stimulated to discover more about the related subjects and bigger picture by following the different relationships shown in the maps as well as the hyperlinks to other documents and files and definitive data sources

  • In addition anybody with access to a full version of the same software can :-

    • Edit, rearrange and recombine the information within a given map in different ways to suit your own view of the world.

    • Using the existing branches of the map as reference base, add their own information to, either from their own sources or by following the links to definitive information sources on the World Wide Web. Again there is a direct analogy with geographic maps which can be used in their own right as a navigation aid, or as a reference basemap to add further information to (locations of customers or organisation offices, boundaries of sales territories etc.).

What software do I need to view the knowledge maps and is it expensive?

At KnowledgeMappers we have used MindManager to create our maps. Created by Mindjet, it is the worlds leading knowledge mapping software with over 2 million users worldwide and over half of the Fortune 100 companies. It is very simple and intuitive to use, even for those who have never worked with knowledge maps before.

Anybody can view MindManager files for free by downloading the MindManager Viewer software or the 30 day trial version of the full software package from the MindJet website (as well as from numerous resellers). The latter gives users access to the complete range of MindManagers versatile functionality (power filtering, exporting to Word, PowerPoint, Project, multimaps etc.) as well as the ability to use the maps (or parts thereof) as base templates to add their own information to, for a time limited period.

A full license for MindManager is round about £200 ($350) but you may get a cheaper deal by shopping around the different resellers as well as bulk purchasing.

What is the pricing structure of your knowledge maps?

Firstly many of our maps, such as the 2005 One Year Diary, are offered for free! For the remainder there are 2 variables:-

  • Personal, Business or Education Charity use? - Many of our maps are useful to both the business user and the individual citizen. Maps for the former are always more expensive than for the latter to reflect the added value our maps bring to the business process.

  • Single or Multiple Users? – We recognise that MindManager is often an organisation wide tool and so you should be able to use our knowledge maps on an organisation wide basis. Thus we offer bulk discounts for multiple user licenses. Again, by definition, this is only for Business Users.

Why should I spend money on a knowledge map when all the information is available to me for free on the internet?

Pay for information? Are you mad? When you purchase one of our maps you are not just buying a list of hyperlinks to online information:-

  • The information ("mind") map format provides a visual structure that makes it much easier to discover / retrieve particular pieces of information - "drill down - not scroll down!"

  • All the information you need is in the one digital document, compiled from definitive sources, probably for the first time ever and certainly not available anywhere else in the same easy to navigate and absorb form. Many of our maps contain 1000's of branches and links that would be inconceivable to document in a standard "linear" way (not in a way that would be usable anyway).

  • Our maps save you time and effort (and therefore money!) in gathering the information yourself, that's assuming you know where to look for the definitive source in the first place.

  • Maps contain hyperlinks to the relevant pages on the World Wide Web wherever possible so they can be used as a launch pad for further information gathering.

  • In addition, because the information is in MindManager format, those who have full versions of the Mindmanager software can :-
    - Use it straight away.
    - Edit it, Update it etc. themselve.
    - Add their own information.
    - Export all or part of it to other programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook etc. as well as traditional databases

Are there any copyright restrictions on the use of the maps?

Top

Short answer - Yes!

Longer answer - What makes our knowledge maps so versatile is that they are in digital, MindManager format, however obviously this means there is no physical barrier to them being copied, sampled, exported etc. ad infinitim, epsecially by MindManager users. Although part of our philosophy at Knowledge Mappers is that of collect once, use as often as possible, we still want to make a living in the future, and therefore we make two basic distinctions when you purchase our maps:-

  • Are maps for personal or commercial (business) use?

  • Will they be used by a single or multiple users?

In either case maps are licensed for unlimited copying as long as it is for purely internal use by the license holder in the case of individuals. For organisations where the maps will be used by more than one individual, they must purchase the correct number of licenses to cover all the people that will be using it internally.

Regarding external activities,r the maps may not be lent, repackaged or otherwise resold or published externally, in whole or in part, without the express written permission of KnowledgeMappers Ltd. You will have to accept a licence agreement to this effect before you can download the maps.

If in any doubt, please contact us to discuss your situation.
